Traditional Strip Method Follicular Unit Transplant

In the hands of an experienced surgeon, the traditional strip method of surgery can lead to excellent natural results. Dr. Ross has performed thousands of surgeries with millions of grafts and attains excellent results with this method. With a FUT procedure, a strip of tissue is removed from the back of the head, which is subsequently dissected under microscopes into single follicles for the transplantation.

With this method of surgery, no shaving of the head is required. Dr. Ross carefully stitches the incision in the back using a tricophytic closure to minimize the size and visibility of the linear scar that is created in the donor area.

This approach is selected most often by women with long hair and by men with longer hair who do not intend to keep their hair short in the future. The results of the grafting are comparable to that of the FUE procedure, without the need to shave the head. However, postoperatively, there is more pain due to the more invasive nature of the surgery and patients must return to have their stitches removed 7-10 days following the surgery.

Pros

No Shaving Required

Cons

Increased post-operative pain

Return post-operative visit required for stitch removal

Linear donor scar may require styling hair slightly longer than with FUE

Chance of residual numbness in the back of the head for several months
