Eyebrow Hair Transplant

What Is an Eyebrow Transplant?

Eyebrows are an integral part of our face’s dynamic, adding color, shape, and symmetry. They protect our eyes from water, sweat, and dust, as well as telegraphing emotions and social cues. But like the hair on our scalp, eyebrows can succumb to the effects of aging, illness, injury, nutritional deficiencies, over-grooming, and especially thyroid disorders. When eyebrows are too thin or sparse, the face can look older, dull, and less defined.
Eyebrow transplantation is a growing segment of the hair restoration market, with more than 10,000 procedures performed each year in the U.S. When performed correctly, it is a natural-looking, permanent way to fill in thinning brows or to replace brows lost to illness or accidents.
During an eyebrow transplant, either a follicular unit extraction (FUE) or a follicular unit transplant (FUT) is used to remove individual follicles from a suitable donor location for placement in the brow area. A skilled surgeon will note the type, color, and growth direction of each hair in order to create the most natural-looking brows possible and to blend seamlessly with any existing brow hair. Artistry is an important aspect of this procedure, as brow hair grows at a more acute angle than other hairs and usually forms a lateral tip with a crisscross pattern toward the edges.

Who is a Candidate for Eyebrow Transplant?

Men and women who have adequate donor hair are often good candidates to undergo surgery for eyebrow loss.

During the procedure, donor hair is harvested from the back of the scalp. For a transplant to be successful there must be enough healthy follicles suitable for relocation to the brow area. Because eyebrow transplantation requires a relatively small number of follicles, this is rarely a problem.

Eyebrow Transplant FAQs

What Causes Eyebrow Thinning?

Eyebrows, like the rest of our hair, often thin as we age. Other reasons for eyebrow thinning and hair loss include thyroid disorders, illness, injury, and over-plucking.

Both procedures have their advantages. Microblading is a semi-permanent cosmetic tattooing process that can make thin eyebrows look thicker, while transplantation makes the eyebrows actually thicker. Transplantation provides full dimensionality and does not require the use of makeup to fully blend the natural and tattooed brows. Grafted hairs have the advantage of permanency and dimension, while microblading is temporary and has a flat appearance when seen from the side profile.

No, it is never necessary to shave one’s eyebrows before a transplant. We may need to shave the donor area, usually a small patch at the back of the scalp, in order to harvest the follicles for transplantation.

The number of grafts required depends on the extent of one’s eyebrow hair loss as well as the desired result. If one wants thicker brows, more grafts will be needed. A simple fill-in could require as few as a few hundred grafts, while a total eyebrow replacement could require up to 700-800 grafts. Only single-haired follicles should be used for this procedure to maintain the most natural results.

Eyebrow transplants are permanent. Follicles harvested for eyebrow procedures are taken from areas of the scalp that are not subjected to the same hair loss factors as those that may be affected by pattern baldness.

Only the individual can decide if an eyebrow transplant is worth the investment. Those who have undergone the procedure report extremely high satisfaction levels, stating that they are happy with the natural-looking, permanent results. The one drawback is that the length of the eyebrows must be maintained properly by grooming/trimming every few days.
