Exosomes are tiny packets of cell mediators that conduct messages between different cells in the body. There are many kinds of exosomes, and they are nanosized vesicles that contain proteins, lipids, growth factors and RNA to communicate from one cell to another cell. They send messages to other cells to tell them what to do.
How Are Exosomes Used for Hair Growth?
At La Mesa Medical Hair Restoration, we have embraced regenerative medicine’s exceptional ability to rejuvenate the scalp and spur hair growth. The Exosome hair treatments we use are called mesenchymal stem cell exosomes (MSCs). These are the exosomes that are generated by mesenchymal stem cells, which are the only effective type of stem cells that work to heal and regenerate hair. Other exosome types are useful to treat other conditions, but not hair follicles.
As with stem cell therapies, there are clinics that offer cheap knockoffs of “exosome treatments,” that use plant-based exosomes, which offer absolutely no benefit to hair growth. Other clinics offer treatments using dried human exosomes in a vial which are reconstituted using a saline solution and injected into the scalp. These are also worthless because exosomes which have been dried and later placed in saline have all been destroyed in the process. Only exosomes flash-frozen and kept at a temperature around -196 degrees centigrade and then slowly thawed before injection contain viable cellular components that are effective for hair loss treatments.
Exosome treatments are minimally invasive alternatives to surgery that consist of a single treatment that lasts roughly 30-40 minutes. The scalp is numbed with a local anesthetic, microneedled, and then the exosomes are injected into the areas of need. Exosome hair injections may be combined with other treatment modalities to achieve maximum results.
